Expression of order-to-made proteins
- At KAICO, we offer custom protein expression trial services using our “silkworm-baculovirus expression system.”
- We use silkworm pupae as a bioreactor. While there are methods to express target proteins in genetically modified silkworm cocoons, KAICO utilizes genetically engineered baculoviruses carrying the target gene. This enables us to respond to your desired protein needs quickly and flexibly.
- We provide comprehensive support for your research and development needs, from desktop research and proposal of expression constructs to expression production and purification of the target protein, all in one place.
Service process
After conducting desktop research on the target protein, we provide preliminary consultations to our customers. Upon receiving an order, we offer interim reports and provide extensive support throughout the process, accompanying our customers every step of the way.
Interim and final report
- We provide interim reports on project progress during expression studies using silkworm pupae.
- Quantitative results will be summarized and reported to the customer during a comprehensive meeting. Along with an expression performance report, we deliver the protein to the customer.
Service period
- From gene receipt to completion takes approximately 5 to 6 months. (As of April 2024)

- Protein from five silkworm pupae
- Please note that the deliverables from this service fall under the regulations of the “Act on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity through Regulations on the Use of Living Modified Organisms” (Cartagena Law). Please handle them in accordance with the regulations when using them.

Custom-made reagents
- Proteins expressed in contract trials are available for sale as custom-made reagents.
- Before production, we will obtain confirmation from the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry regarding the second type use of genetically modified organisms, etc., within our company. Therefore, in principle, they can be used as research reagents not subject to the Cartagena Law (depending on the content, there may be cases where they fall under the Cartagena Law).
- The lead time for the initial production of custom-made reagents is approximately 3 months.
